Objective
The goal in Spikeball is to be the first team to score 21 points.
Gameplay
Divide the 4 players into two teams of two players each. The gameplay starts with a serve. A player from one of the two teams will smack the ball down into the net, and the game has begun. The opposing team now has 3 touches to bounce the ball off of the net. You can think of it a lot like Volleyball teammates must alternate hits up to three times to return the ball to the other team (much like bump, set, and spike in Volleyball). A rally continues until one team is not able to bounce the ball off of the net. When a team is unable to bounce the ball off of the net in their 3 hits the other team receives a point, and they start the next rally with a serve.
Gameplay continues until one team reaches 21 points. The team that reaches 21 points is the winner. To shorten games you can modify the scoring to 11, or 15 points.
Additional Gameplay Notes
- Players must strike the ball with any part of their body, you cannot catch or carry the ball in any way. Catches or carries result in a point for the other team.
- Players can hit the ball in any direction off of the net meaning that gameplay will often flow around the net in a circle.
- Players cannot hit the ball directly into the rim of the net, this results in a point for the other team
- The ball is not allowed to roll across the net, it must bounce. If a hit results in the ball rolling across the net the other team receives a point.
- Opposing players must make a clear effort to avoid getting in the way of, or running into the team hitting the ball.
Spikeball Variations and Alternate Rules
Catch N Throw: Great for kids, this variation allows the players to catch the ball and then throw it into the net.
Floor is Lava: The ball is allowed to bounce off of the ground one time per possession for each team.
Infinity Touch: Both teams have unlimited touches per possession.
