Objective
So Clover! is a co-op word-association game perfect for groups of friends or parties of new pals. Players work as part of a team to get the highest score possible, which is later archived within the Record of Legends. The objective of So Clover! is to play detective to identify clues to figure out a player’s keywords. Players must get creative to help their team draw the right conclusions!
Gameplay
So Clover! is played in two phases: the Clue Selection phase, which is played solo, and the Resolution phase, which is a team effort that requires all brains on deck.
Clue Selection Phase:
The game begins with all players simultaneously picking up their Clover board to secretly look at the 8 Keywords on the outer edges of their cards. Note: You’ll see 2 Keywords that form a pair below each Clue Zone. Each player should see 4 Pairs on their Clover board.
After seeing these 4 Pairs, players should secretly brainstorm a Clue that connects their 2 Keywords somehow.
Clue Rules:
- Clues must be a single word or compound word
- Clues can be a common noun, acronym, number, or onomatopoeias
- Clues cannot be a word within the same family as a Keyword (“Princess” cannot be used to suggest a Pair with “sister” and “Prince”)
- Clues cannot be either one of your Keywords or its translation into another language. (“ Amour” cannot be used to connect “Love” and “France”.)
- Clues cannot be a made-up word that perhaps one of the players would understand.
For example: For the Pair “Sheep” and “Clothing,” “Wool” is an acceptable entry for the Clue Zone.
Once all players have written their 4 Clues, everyone must remove all of the Keyword cards from their Clover boards. Without peeking, players will then draw 1 new card and shuffle it in with their other 4 Keyword cards.
Next, players should place their Clover board down in front of them and put their 5 cards on top of it in a face-down pile. Once this step has been completed by the entire party, the Resolution phase begins!
Resolution Phase:
Once the Resolution phase begins, randomly choose a player to be the first Spectator. Every other player will then look at their Clover boards. The Spectator cannot communicate in any way during their spectating phase, no talking, signing, nada! Each player will be a Spectator eventually.
The Spectator will launch their round by placing their Clover board and 5 Keyword cards face up in the middle of the table. Using the Clues, players will then collaborate and combine brain power to decipher the Spectator’s Pairs and place the cards back into the correct spaces on the Clover board.
Note: If there is a disagreement about where the cards should go, the player sitting directly to the left of the Spectator receives the right to make the final call on placements. Once players agree on the placements, the Spectator will verify the Keywords. Get ready for ridiculousness and laughs as players connect the dots between the Clues!
Endgame
The game of So Clover ends once each player has been given an opportunity to be the Spectator. After everyone has been the Spectator once, the game ends. Tally up the points you all gained and record your impressive score in the Record of Legends.
Tips & Strategy
- Have Faith: During the Clue selection phase, some connections might seem mind-boggling. But trust in your friend’s word association skills to give it a go. When at a loss for connection, write the first word that pops into your head!
- Visualize: During the resolution phase, it’s encouraged to place the Keywords on the Clover board to help imagine potential connections and combinations. It also helps with getting other players on the same page before settling on a decision!
