Setup
Number of Players
- 3 or more (no limit)
Setting
- Freeze tag can be played anywhere, but make sure to define boundaries so the kids don’t run too far away. Also, inside can be dangerous if you don’t have enough space.
Supplies
- Just people and space!
Objective
Similar to regular tag, the objective of freeze tag is to avoid being “it”. However, whereas tag can theoritically go on forever, a round of freeze tag can be won by either everyone being frozen by the tagger or the tagger running out of time before freezing everyone.
Gameplay
Choose one player to be “It” (this person will be the “freezer”). You can choose by someone volunteering, drawing straws, etc. You usually play multiple rounds so it’s not a big deal to be chosen first!
The game starts by counting to ten and the other players scattering and try to avoid being tagged by the freezer.
When a player is tagged, they must “freeze” and cannot move until another non-tagger “unfreezes” them by tapping them.
The game continues until all players have been frozen, or until the freezer is unable to tag anyone else. To help with structure, set a five minute time limit for each round!
Unlike regular tag, freeze tag usually doesn’t include a safe base since you’re allowed to be unfrozen by your peers.
